Just out of curiosity, I just did a quick job search on LSJ.com using the keyword “communication.” Here is what I found:
Graphic Services Manager for Dart Container
Web Designer for Dart Container
Marketing Specialist for The Christman Company
Communications Editor for Accident Fund
These are perfect jobs for professional writers and I really encourage any recent grads to apply for these positions. I was pleasantly surprised to see a good number of positions listed on just one source, and I am sure with a little web scouring, more could easily be found.
Back when I was job searching, these were all places I regularly checked for postings.
Michigan Nonprofit Association – Classifieds
Also check city web sites, I regularly checked the City of East Lansing and the City of Lansing. Depending on the type of work you want, it may be worthwhile to seek out organizations that you may not typically think of employing creative professionals. For example: universities and colleges, sports teams, art museums, zoos, libraries, and performing arts venues, are just a few of the places I looked for possible jobs.
Some organizations will be large enough to hire their own in-house staff, others need to contract this work out to others — figure out who is likely to get this contracted work and see if they are hiring. Right here in Old Town Lansing there is a thriving (and growing) creative community. For instance, check out Addis Enterprises, CiesaDesign, Redhead Design Studio and Group 230 (for a full list, check out the “Design/Media/Marketing” section of the Old Town Businesses web site).
I know our state is facing hard times economically right now, but there are good jobs out there — and many of them are right here in mid-Michigan. If you have a general area in mind, then you should learn about the local economy. I love the online magazine Capital Gains. It’s filled with info about which companies are growing in Lansing and also does some interesting features on creative professionals (check out the recent article on Redhead Design Studio!)
My best wishes to all graduating seniors who are on the job hunt. I hope some of these links can be helpful in your search.
