Kathryn Houghton

Tell us about your educational/professional background.
I graduated with a degree in professional writing from MSU in 2008. While at State I worked as a writing and digital consultant at the Writing Center and as an editorial assistant for Fourth Genre, MSU’s literary magazine of nonfiction. Currently I am a graduate student at Eastern Washington University (EWU) studying fiction writing.

Tell us about your current job.
I hold two different positions right now. I work as a web designer and technical writer for Online Learning at EWU. Online Learning basically encompasses all of the online courses and the resources required to maintain them, and so I spend a lot of time working in Blackboard LMS or making updates to the various websites that fall under the umbrella of my division.

My other position is web editor for Willow Springs, EWU’s literary magazine of poetry, prose, and interviews. I am responsible for updating and maintaining the Willow Springs website, which can mean anything from fixing typos and updating staff lists to creating new graphics and contacting authors for featured content. Since this position is also part of the management team, I also get to work in some other areas such as manuscript screening and copyediting.

The Communications Plan

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

If there is one thing I’ve learned from my work experience so far, it’s that planning and managing projects is essential.

Check out Nick Lucido’s post “How to Write a Communications Plan” at PR Start.  He interviews Kelly Rossman-McKinney of The Rossman Group and outlines an eight-step process to planning strategic communications.

I strive to effectively manage multiple small projects week-to-week, so what I might add to Nick’s post is simply to follow through and be consistent. My projects tend to be on a smaller scale and are more frequent. Right now I have three separate documents on my desk detailing communications strategies for three separate projects. It can be a lot to manage, but I’m finding ways to stay organized to keep up on the deadlines. For example, I’ve started making weekly master due date calendars. This can be considerable work up front, but as a one-woman office, it helps to keep me on track and see the big picture.

What strategies and tactics do you use to plan effective communications?

Guest Blog: Design Inspiration, Lisa Shaw – Part 2

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

beyondwords would like to welcome back guest blogger, Lisa Shaw. Lisa earned a degree in Professional Writing from Michigan State University and a certificate in book publishing from the University of Denver.  Lisa is currently teaching English to students in Busan, South Korea. This guest post is the second in a two-part series of design inspiration.

Be sure to check out Part 1 of Lisa’s guest post!

Simple and colorful — if there was a theme to the bulk of my pictures from South Korea so far, that would probably be it. Design inspiration can come from anywhere, and I’ve found that lately, mine has been coming from shapes, colors, and more natural elements.  So, here are some of my top picks! Topping my list is definitely the snapshot of the lotus flowers in the doorway to a historic temple. The contrast of pink and green against the shadowed room, the curve of petals, and the aged detail designs on the door itself…

Looking for an internship in Michigan?

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

If you’re a student looking for internship opportunities or an employer looking for up-and-coming talent in Michigan, check out Intern In Michigan, a site dedicated to connecting “Michigan’s businesses to young Michigan talent.” According to Intern In Michigan:

A survey sponsored jointly by the S.E. Michigan WIRED (Workforce Innovations in Regional Economic Development) and the Michigan Municipal League, sent to over 33,000 graduates of public universities in 2007, found that 46% had left the State by the Spring of 2008. The results were based on the responses of over 5,300 people, 88% of whom were Michigan natives. Clearly, other regions of the country are reaping the rewards of our investment in the education of our young people.

As we try to keep talented young professionals in our state and improve our economy, tools such as Intern In Michigan can be invaluable. So spread the word. If you know students looking for opportunities, please send them a link to the site. And if you are an employer, make this your first stop when recruiting new talent to your organization.

The site also features regional news and links to the site’s partners, such as the Detroit Regional Chamber.

Skittles.com creates social media buzz

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

Twitter was all abuzz today about the new skittles.com. The new site is a melding of social media pages banded together with a widget in the upper left corner. The widget navigates to Skittles pages on Facebook, Twitter, Wikipedia, Flickr, and YouTube.

This concept is no doubt daring and experimental. I really look forward to consumer reaction and commentary from social media experts. I like that Skittles is using their social media pages. We often read about and talk about doing more than just creating a Facebook fan page or Twitter account – we talk about making social media work for our brands and products. I think what Skittles has done is the ultimate and most literal way to get something out of social media. It will be interesting to see where this goes – and what other brands follow the trend.

It’s also interesting that before one enters the site, age verification is required. I’m assuming this is because Skittles has little control over the content users post, and profanity does appear on their pages.

Logic + Emotion posted on the subject today, and I agree with David Armano that we are likely to see more of this as social media continues to be the next big thing in branding and advertising.

I’m looking forward to your comments on the Skittles site. Please share!
