Letterpress from Heart Fish

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

I’m pretty fascinated by letterpress. I pore over photo-filled blogs of beautiful designs, and Heart Fish is one of my favorites. I ordered a custom print of the word “BLISS” and was so happy to see that Hijiri posted photos of her process.

Bliss is, of course, a very fun and happy word, but it’s also the last name of my better half (and some day – but not any time soon – my last name). So, it has special meaning, and I can’t wait to frame and display this print.

You can see  all of the photos at Heart Fish.

As a side note, I’ve recently come into about 100 pounds of small, movable metal type (a 5 gallon bucket full). I’m not sure what to do with it yet. Any crafty-types out there with project ideas?

One more to add to Google Reader

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

I love the Top Recommendations from Google Reader. Today I noticed a link for the blog Newly Corporate. The blog authors are six young professionals who work in fields such as sales and marketing,  IT and communications. The group writes:

We hope the name is self explanatory enough but, this site is for young professionals, by young professionals. In the spirit of the ever-overused corporate moniker “Best Practice Sharing” we hope you’ll find the information on this site both helpful to you as you grow into your career, and mildly entertaining.

And from what I’ve seen, they are doing a great job at tackling topics such as the rough economy, networking, and impressing your boss. My favorite post is about using Google Alerts to boost your career. The author created alerts for topics relevant to his industry and compiled the links into a weekly report he sent to the company CEO.

Be sure to add this one to your Reader as well!

Good stuff I’ve stumbled upon while packing up my office

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

I’m starting a new job next week. This has meant that the last two weeks I’ve spent a lot of time wrapping up projects, cleaning out my desk, organizing, and cleaning up files on my laptop. It also has meant that I’ve had a much slower pace at work than I am typically used to. It’s been a nice change of pace, though I fully realize it’s merely the calm before the storm. This time next week I’ll be up to my elbows with meetings and introductions as I begin to settle in at the new place.

This atypical lull has left me feeling slightly uninspired, as most of my blog fodder comes from my work and the fast-paced thrill of it all. Then it hit me — during this time I’ve become very good friends with my Google Reader. I’ve nearly doubled my subscriptions since boxing up my desk and hauling it all home.

So this is some of what I’ve been reading lately. It’s all beautiful, useful stuff, even if it’s not directly related to professional writing. I’ve found that some of the fashion and interior design blogs are a great source of inspiration for color palates and patterns.

Here are five of my favorites:
