TEDxDetroit: Positive ideas for the world from Detroit

Monday, September 28th, 2009

There is still time to submit your application for the inaugural TEDxDetroit, which is taking place October 21, 2009.

What is TEDxDetroit? It’s an event that will bring together the area’s leading creators, catalysts, entrepreneurs, artists, technologists, designers, scientists, thinkers, and doers to share positive ideas for the world from Detroit. TEDxDetroit

TEDxDetroit will embody the spirit that began with TED, a small nonprofit that brings together people from around the world to share ideas in Technology, Entertainment, Design.

Attendance at TEDxDetroit is by application and space is very limited. There is also an attendance fee in the form of a $20 donation to the TEDxDetroit charity partner Public Art Workz.

Why an application form for a conference? TEDxDetroit explains:

The TEDxDetroit Attendee Application form is not a typical conference registration form. We’re looking for people who will be a strong contributor to the TEDxDetroit experience and the ideas discussed at TEDxDetroit.

Only a very limited number of seats are available at this first TEDxDetroit. Our aim is to curate a stimulating exchange of ideas among a diverse group of peers. We hope to continue to grow the size of TEDxDetroit with future events.

Along with the event, there will be a networking lunch hosted by LA2M and a Tweet-up afterward. To learn more, visit the TEDxDetroit website.

Write Here, Write Now

Friday, November 7th, 2008

MichiganIs Michigan the right place to start a career in professional writing? Are there opportunities in Greater Lansing for you? Is the transformation of Michigan’s economy likely to help or hurt the prospects for professional writers?

To address these questions, students from Intro to Professional Writing classes in the PW program at MSU will be hosting Write Here, Write Now: A Town Hall Meeting on Tuesday, November 18 at 7:00 p.m. in 107 S. Kedzie Hall on the MSU campus.

This interactive and informative event will bring together Michigan policy makers, MSU faculty, and professional writers to discuss concerns facing the state of Michigan and jobs in the future for today’s professional writing students.

Two moderated panels, each with representatives from local government, the university, and the professional writing community will address questions posed by Professional Writing majors, as well as questions from the audience.

Courtney Chapin, Field Career Service Coordinator for College of Arts & Letters, MSU Career Services and Placement, will lead the first panel discussion about the current state of the job market for professional writers.

The second panel, “What does the future hold?”, will be led by our very own Lindsey Latour, MSU graduate, M.A. in Digital Rhetoric & Professional Writing, and beyondwords co-author; and John Monberg, MSU Professional Writing faculty and engaged scholar in Community Development and Urban Renewal.

This free event is a great chance to engage with other professional writers in Michigan and stay up to date with the field of professional writing, so be sure to mark your calendars!

Shannon Paul Discusses Startup Weekend Detroit

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

Startup Weekend DetroitHave you ever wondered what a group of highly talented and motivated people could accomplish in a weekend? Startup Weekend is a unique three-day experience that brings together the best and brightest people in a local office space to take a company from concept to completion in just 54 hours.

Shannon Paul, public relations and social media blogger, has started Startup Weekend Detroit, which is happening November 14-16. Check out Shauna Nicholson’s interview with Shannon to find out why she started the event and why this is a great event for professional writers.

Why did you decide to organize Startup Weekend in Detroit?
I don’t know that it was actually a conscious decision. I was able to attend part of Startup Weekend Ann Arbor, and had several friends who attended that event. When I came home, I started looking deeper into the Startup Weekend organization and reading up on the process to bring Startup Weekend to a particular city. I realized there was a voting process and saw that Detroit was already nominated, but only had 20 votes. To give you an idea of where we stood, we were behind Corvallis, Oregon.

I just thought that Detroit could really use this more than most places. There is so much bad news coming out of this city — especially when it comes to job losses and the overall economy. I thought an event like this would help bring out some of the area’s talent and help jumpstart small business development in the city and the region. It was also my hope to generate a few positive news stories as a result of the event.

Why is it important for the event to happen NOW?
Detroit, and the surrounding region, is facing some of the most challenging times in its history. The future of the economy in this region is going to depend on the ingenuity of individuals who can start small. Most of the new jobs being created in this economy are from small businesses. I believe that there are as many talented, skilled and passionate people in this city as any other, but we haven’t been so great at forming a really solid community around networking and innovation. Community is an essential ingredient to fostering the kind of supportive environment for new businesses to be able to thrive.

Who attends events like this?
Just about anybody with an idea or a skill or both is welcome to participate in this event. Usually Startup Weekend attracts people with deep technical/programming skills as well as design professionals, marketing and public relations professionals, project managers and venture capitalists. Most companies that have formed as a result of a Startup Weekend have been web-based, but there are many notable exceptions to this rule. (more…)
